| Cairo has always been a shopper’s paradise. Shopping ranges from the famous Khan El-Khalili Souk (bazaar) largely unchanged since the 14th century, to modern shopping malls. Particularly good buys are spices, perfumes, gold, silver, carpets, brass, leatherwork, glass, and ceramics. Try some of the famous street markets, like Wekalet El-Balah, for fabrics, the Tentmakers Bazaar, (El-Khayameya) for appliqué work, and Mohammed Ali Street for musical instruments. |

Yet another amazing experience to have in Cairo. This bazaar is a maze of streets and lanes where you can buy all sorts of things: clothes, shishas, toy camels, souvenirs, perfumes, jewellery, t-shirts, hats, spices, antiques, cushion covers or sheet sets, musical instruments, belly dancing outfits, local foods, scarves, etc. While you’re there, it’s well worth it to stop at the famous El Fishawy Cafe for a Turkish coffee and a shisha. |
Cotton
Egyptian cotton is preferred around the world because it is a long fiber cotton. This makes it softer and durable at the same time.Three specific districts, Wekalet El Balah, Al Azhar Street and El Sad Street beside the Saida ZeinabMosque, are well known among Egyptians for their large selection of cotton fabrics at great prices. While shopping remember a few things, pure cotton will be cheaper than items made with a cotton blend and the more complex the design the more expensive the item will be.
Jewellery
You will find lots of beautiful, often handmade, jewellery in Cairo. A usual favorite is personalized cartouches. You can have them made with your name printed in hieroglyphics or Arabic. They are available in many sizes in gold and silver. The price of gold, silver, and some precious materials, such as red corral, are state regulated. One indication of authenticity is if the item has a small trade stamp pressed into the silver. The merchant will weigh the item and you will pay per gram. This is one of the rare times that the price is not up for negotiation.
