Weather A trip to Egypt is the best in the spring and in the fall when the weather is the most moderate. March to May has highs from 24-33 degrees Celsius and lows of 11-17 C and September to November has highs from 26-32 C and lows of 14-30 C. Winter can be chilly and overcast in Cairo averaging 18 / 8 C. Whatever the season make sure to carry a bottle of water and wear sunscreen. Dress Although Egypt is a predominantly Islamic country it is not necessary to adopt the native clothing. However, out of respect for the culture and religion make sure to dress modestly while walking in the street. Women are expected to cover their hair while visiting a mosque. More liberal clothing is acceptable in the resort areas and while going clubbing, dancing or dining. Physical Distance Note that men and women in Egypt relate to one another differently than men and women in most western countries. Personal space among members of the same sex will be much closer than you may be used to but men and women tend to stand further apart. Tipping In Egypt tipping, called baksheesh, is a way of life. In hotels and restaurants, like everywhere else, a tip between 10% and 15% is the acceptable norm. However, tour assistants, baggage handlers and just about everyone that will do anything for you will expect a tip. In order to deal with the situation, carry a lot of small bills (1LE to 10LE) as you will be tipping little, but often. Bargaining Another facet of life in Egypt is bargaining. Virtually everything is open to negotiation particularly in the open markets. The rules are simple. First, shop around to get a rough idea of the prices, and then decide how much you are willing to spend. Be polite, relaxed and fair in your dealing. Once a price has been agreed upon by both parties go ahead with the purchase. Prices are set in department stores and stores in shopping malls. Traffic and Transport There is no denying that Cairo's traffic is an experience of its own. Consequently, if your destination is across town, inquire approximately how long it will take to reach it, add an hour to the given time and you will get there punctually and with your nerves intact. Photography Photography needs to be undertaken with care. When taking photographs of people, ask their permission first. A fee to take pictures will be charged inside pyramids, tombs, and museums. Photos of police or military personnel and installations are forbidden. Food & Drink Food in Egypt is plentiful and varied. Egyptian cuisine is excellent, combining many of the best traditions of Middle Eastern cooking with Continental cuisine. Some of the larger hotels in Cairo and the vicinity boast kitchens specializing in variations of Indian, the Far East, etc. American style fast food chains are also spreading all over the city. But while in Egypt, sample the local specialties featured in the Restaurants section. Alcohol is available in hotels, major restaurants and bars. The legal drinking age is 21.
