Egypt is a country on the move which is good because it provides you with numerous options to get around. Although you may find people traversing the land on camel or donkey, we suggest you choose a more modern means of transport to spend less time in transit and more time enjoying your destination.

TAXIS
 |
There are no shortages of black and white taxis in Egypt! These taxis do not have a meter, so you will need to negotiate a price before you ride. A typical taxi fare for a 10-minute ride (without traffic jams) is 5-10 LE. There are also better maintained yellow taxis throughout Cairo. Yellow taxis do have a meter, but you may need to call 3 hours in advance before you expect to be picked up. If you are unfamiliar with Cairo and wish for a full day of touring, it is recommended you hire a driver and negotiate a price.

CAR RENTAL
Driving in Cairo is not for the faint of heart. Anything can happen at any time and one must always be on the defense. Traffic lanes are nonexistent, as are traffic signals and vehicles drive in close proximity to one another. Foreigners may rent cars, but must have a current international driving permit and be +25 in age. For more information, contact:
Metro and Trains METRO
 |
The cheapest and fastest means of transportation is the Cairo Metro system. The Metro runs daily from 5:30 am to 12:30 am (see Cairo Metro Map). A one-way ride is 1LE and tickets must be used to enter and exit the platform. Tickets can be purchased at every station. For unaccompanied female travelers, there are "women only" cars available in the center of the metro.
